The book
Helping Children Remain Their Authentic Selves in a Limiting World.
The book gives parents, caregivers and educators a way to see how growing up teaches people to hide parts of themselves, and to examine ideas about identity and gendered toys. It draws on original research, conversations with psychologists and childhood experts, and interviews with children, and it offers art, poetry, journaling and selfies as ways for adults and children to explore who they are.
The work
Children’s Arts Guild is a New York nonprofit. Its initiative, Authenticity Works, is a movement of caring adults who help children, and the adults who raise and teach them, stay true to who they are in a world that limits who children can be.
The programs serve families, educators and health professionals. They include For Real: Leading with Authenticity workshops for educators, a community cohort for parents and caregivers, a readers’ group for the book, and online resources.
Alexander is the founding president and CEO of Children’s Arts Guild.
